End of year Alton Towers trip - 16th June 2008

 

We set off from the College at 7:00am and made a quick stop at Scotch Corner to pick up Ben. After a 4-hour journey, due to some traffic problems, we arrived at Alton Towers, where we then had to wait for almost an hour to pick up the tickets!

Finally, we entered the park and most of the group headed towards "Oblivion". Oblivion is a vertical drop roller coaster that drops you 180ft at 68mph. Jordan had never been on a roller coaster and was unsurprisingly very nervous. Jamie was his usual self when queuing for a thrill ride - white as a sheet and very quiet!

Next we headed to "Rita - Queen of Speed". At this point we met up with Kim, Amy, Kelly, Tony and Andy. Tony and Andy chose to sit it out whilst the rest of the group joined the 40 minute queue. Once in the queue Jordan started to look a bit nervous and stated that his stomach was a bit queasy. Half way round the queue he stated that this would be his last big ride, and he didn't want to go on "Nemesis" and "Air". However he agreed to give Rita a go. Rita was fast, and really shook your head. Mike and Ben held their hands up all the way round, and were rewarded with a head battering. Jordan and Rachel held on to try to minimise the shake.

Next we headed to "Air". We quickly stopped at Burger King to buy lunch and then headed for the queue, where we stood eating. Ben did his usual job of finishing off any spare/ half-eaten food. Jordan and Lee opted to sit this one out whilst Mike, Rachel, Craig, Kim, Kelly, Amy, Ben, Luke and Shane braved the Flying coaster.

Next we headed to the last of the Alton Towers "Big Four" - "Nemesis". Nemesis is an Inverted Roller coaster featuring 4 inversions and a top speed of 50mph. This proved too much for some, and only Mike, Rachel, Ben, Craig, Luke, Kelly, Amy, Shane and Kim braved it.

We finished the day by heading to "The Flume". Unfortunately the queue was large, and time was short. So instead we headed to the exit. On the way we noticed "Battle Galleons" - a large "Splash Battle" water ride where guests sit in boats which travel along a track. Mike, Luke, Lee, Jamie, Ben, Kelly, Amy and Shane took sail on a galleon and prepared to be soaked. The water was fired from canons that needed to be continuously pumped, whilst passers by could soak the pirates with their own canons. Fortunately Mike had packed 6 waterproof ponchos. These were distributed to Kelly, Amy, Lee and Luke. Shane, Jamie and Ben chose not to take advantage of the offer. The result was three, extremely wet students! Near the end of the ride Jordan decided to take control of a water cannon and try to soak the pirates. Unfortunately his one gun was no match for Ben's, Amy's, Kelly's and Shane's, and Jordan was soaked!

Finally, we headed back to the bus and left the park at 4:00pm. Several of the students found it hard to stay awake and cuddled up together on the ride home.

 

 

We arrived back at the College at 7:50pm - making a drop off at Scotch Corner.
